Supporting activities of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA)
What is the Archaeological Research Trust ?
ART is an independent not-for-profit organization whose mission is to raise and grant funds in support of projects at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA).
Founded in 1963 by the State of South Carolina, SCIAA is concerned with the teaching, research, and management of South Carolina’s historic and prehistoric past, as understood through terrestrial and underwater archaeology. Funded by the SC Legislature, it is a hybrid organization – part university institute, and part state agency.
As an institute at the University of South Carolina (USC), SCIAA initiates and conducts a broad range of field and collections research throughout the state, participates in a wide range of USC activities and duties, and contributes to the university infrastructure and publication series.
As a state agency, SCIAA serves as the state’s official repository for archaeological site data and archaeological collections generated from work on those sites.
